About Winter’s Fleet
Have you heard of the myth of North Shields?
We’ll let you in on the secret…
North Shields has always been a meeting point, of land and sea, near and far, where the salt in the water meets salt of the earth.
Every winter, mysterious creatures come ashore. They hide in alleyways, behind buildings, inside walls and forgotten corners of the town… Only the believers get glimpses of them, Others aren’t sure they’re real at all.
Until... the Spring Equinox.
When day is as long as night, when the Spring Tide leaps forth from the Black Middens, reaching towards the Highlights, and calling the creatures home, they begin their migration, back to the bottom of the ocean.
Winter’s Fleet is a creative project inviting schools, families, and local community groups to help create a new mythology for North Shields, capturing the spirit, humour and uniqueness of the town, culminating in a large-scale public performance in Northumberland Square, on the weekend of the Spring Equinox (20-21 March 2027).
