NXS800 is a new iteration of an experimental symphony written by North Shields born music producer Geoff Kirkwood, aka Man Power, and noted musician and orchestral arranger Fiona Brice. The piece features the North Shields Temporary Philharmonic Orchestra, an ensemble of global players formed specifically for this event.
The piece is an exploration of working class experiences and identity, and this newest version will focus on the history and traditions of North Shields itself, utilising archival sound and field recordings alongside historic regional visual content presented by Visual artist Jay Halim.
The performance will be recorded for a forthcoming release on prestigious record label “Athens of the North”.
The bill features a one-off performance by Man Power and special guests BENEFITS, who are fresh from a nationwide tour of their new album Constant Noise which was released in March 2025 on Invada records.
The performance will combine electronic composition, live instrumentation and spoken word, with visual content from North East photographer Eye On The Tyne’s “Harvest of The Deep Exhibition” which details the modern lives of those working in the North Shields fishing fleet.
The performance will take place at King Street Social Club, a venue which has gained worldwide notoriety in recent years through presenting performances and events featuring the likes of Django Django, Caribou, Lanterns on The Lake and a whole host of international musical talent who have helped put North Shields on the map as a cultural destination.
The event has been made possible through funding from the North East Combined Authority and represents part of this years North Shields 800 program, celebrating the town’s 800th anniversary in 2025.
